A 30-Day Year-End Giving Plan for Small Development Teams

For most nonprofits, the last weeks of the year are the most important fundraising window. GivingTuesday falls on December 1 this year, and December 31 is the final day for donors to make gifts that count toward this tax year. If your team is small, the key is a simple plan you can actually finish.

Here is a 30-day plan built for organizations with one or two people working on development.

Week 1: Get your list and your story ready

  • Pull a clean list of everyone who gave in the last two years. Remove duplicates and update addresses and emails.

  • Split the list into three groups: major donors, regular donors and lapsed donors.

  • Choose one story that shows the difference a gift makes. One person, one need, one outcome.

  • Set a clear goal and decide what a gift will make possible.

Week 2: Talk to your most important donors first

  • Call or meet your top donors before any mass appeal goes out. Thank them, share the story and invite them to give early.

  • Ask one or two of them to fund a matching gift for GivingTuesday or the final week of December.

  • Ask board members to make their own gifts and to write personal notes to people they know.

Week 3: Giving Tuesday

  • Send a short email the week before to let supporters know what's coming.

  • On the day, send two or three emails and post updates showing progress toward the goal.

  • Thank every donor within 48 hours. A prompt, personal thank-you is where the second gift begins.

Week 4: The final push to December 31

  • Mail and email your year-end appeal to regular and lapsed donors.

  • Send a reminder in the last week of December and a final note on December 30 or 31.

  • Make sure your online giving page works on a phone and loads quickly.

After January 1

Report back to donors on what their gifts made possible, and note who gave for the first time. Those first-time donors are your best opportunity for next year.

Need a second set of hands?

If your team is stretched thin this season, a fractional Director of Development can build and run this plan alongside you. Start with a Growth Audit and we'll show you where the biggest year-end opportunities are in your own donor base.
